American whiskey in all its forms, whether Moonshine, Rye, Bourbon or mash is as old as the first Irish and Scottish settlers in the New World. It took root in the Appalachian Mts and spread to Kentucky and then further a field. 
Geology tells us the Appalachian mountains and those found along the west coast of Ireland and Scotland were once part of the same range before continental drift.  Perhaps those 1t settlers sensed that. There is some potent poetry in thinking that the waters filtering through  the same rock on both sides  contribute to the  base of this most remarkable spirit.
