At Prohibition River, we take pride in our extensive library of over 140 whiskies ( Irish, Scotch, Bourbon, Rye, Sour Mash and Japanese).

The word whiskey (or whisky) is an anglicization of the Classical Gaelic word "Uisce" meaning water (of life). It was first recorded in written form in 1405 in Ireland where the oldest continuously licensed distillery in the world is located ( Bushmills Distillery in Co. Antrim. )

The introduction of Prohibition (1920 to 1933)  in the US devastated the Irish Whiskey brands as many relied on exports to the USA to be financially viable. Many of the distilleries were forced out of business.
Scotch whisky ( considered inferior to Irish whiskey at the time) was less reliant on the US market as they could rely on the British Empire during the dark days of Prohibition.

Thankfully Prohibition was repealed by the Cullen-Harrison Act of 1933. (no relation)

A renaissance in small pot Irish Whiskey making has occured in the last 30 years resulting in many new creative brands and distinctive varietals.

On a personal note.
My great great Grand uncle Michael Clarke was a gin runner during Prohibition. Though he was initially successful, his luck ran out and enjoyed a lengthy sojourn in Sing Sing.
However his story ends on a sad note.
Unfortunately, he came out of prison a changed man, gave up the good life, settled down and gave his money to the Church.
